went to check out Tony Maws’s newly opened restaurant The Kirkland Tap & Trotter with pork belly and couple friends last weekend. Tony Maws, james beard award winner and chef of craigie on main, aimed to create a very relaxed neiborhood spot where he could hang and serve simple but refined and perfectly executed food and guests could feel comfortable enough to eat with their hands. lol im comfortable with eating with my hands anywhere tho. if you serve me anything on a bone, ima eat it cave man style. but no, i never lick my fingers.
House-made Spaghetti, chicken liver, pumpkin, brown butter – anything w/chicken liver is probably one of the things i always avoid to order. hardly anyone can cook it right and get rid of the iron-y, liver-y, gamey taste, but tony maws’s got it, the dish was creamy, rich, and flavorful.
Choucroute Garni, two sausages, pork belly, Kirkland kraut
very well executed. pork belly was melt in your mouth soft and juicy, everything you would appreciate from a piece of pork belly. sausages were flavorful and moist. you wont go wrong by ordering anything off a pig at tony maws restaurants.
The Kirkland Tap and Trotter is crowd friendly. noise level could be a little high if you are looking for a romantic/quiet dinner date. we enjoyed everything we ordered as well as the open kitchen scene. drinks were good and beer & wine list is eclectic. however, the service was not as good as i expected after being used to the impeccable service at craigie on main. felt the servers werent very experienced and were in a rush. the food took forever to come out. we finished 2 baskets of bread before the food came out. since the restaurant’s only been open for couple weeks probably still sorting things out, i’d give them time to improve. overall, it was a very enjoyable & satisfying meal and everything i expected from tony maws.
